Motivational Monday: Your Energy Isn't Free, It's a Luxury

I caught the New Heights episode last week and when Taylor dropped this, I literally paused, rewound, and wrote it down in giant letters: “You should think of your energy as if it’s expensive, as if it’s like a luxury item.”
She goes on to explain (and I felt this in my bones) that not everyone has earned access to it, and what you spend your energy on becomes your day. In other words: your attention is the currency of your life. Spend it where it multiplies.
Here’s why I’m sharing this today: I needed that reminder myself this week. I was juggling a hundred good things, plus a few… not-so-good ones trying to climb into my front row. A couple of texts that weren’t urgent, a conversation that could’ve waited, someone else’s stress looking for a place to land. I almost let it land on me. Almost. Then I heard Taylor’s line again and decided: no more free samples.
My energy is a luxury item, curated, intentional, and not on clearance.
If you’re nodding along, try these tiny-but-mighty shifts with me:
1) Price your energy. Not with dollars, with standards. Who gets real-time access? Who gets “later”? Who gets “not today”? Put a quiet guardrail around your peace and let it do its job.
2) No more emotional walk-ins.Unexpected vent sessions are like people wandering into your boutique and pawing the merch. You can care without becoming the coat rack. “I’m happy to talk, can we schedule a time?” is a complete sentence.
3) ROE: Return on Energy.Notice what activities, people, and thoughts pay you back with clarity, momentum, or joy. Do more of those, unapologetically. The rest? Bless and release.
4) A boundary script for your back pocket:“I’m protecting my energy today so I can show up fully for what matters. Can we circle back tomorrow/next week?”
Short, kind, firm. You don’t owe a dissertation.
5) A 60-second reset when you feel the pull:Hand on heart. Inhale for four, hold for four, exhale for six. Ask: Is this mine to carry? If not, imagine setting it down and walking away lighter.
This week, let’s protect our shine on purpose. We’re not here to be the world’s emotional sponge. We’re here to create, to serve, to build lives that feel aligned, without letting every wandering vibe hitch a ride.
Your energy is rare. Treat it that way. And if you needed permission to say “not today,” you’ve got it, frame it, hang it, and live it. As Taylor put it, think of your energy like a luxury item. Choose where it goes, and watch your whole day (and week) follow suit.
You’ve got this! I’m cheering you on!
